Engineering PLUS Northeast Regional Hub (NERHub):
The overarching goal of the NSF Eddie Bernice INCLUDES Engineering PLUS Alliance is to increase the annual number of Black, Indigenous, and other People of Color (BIPOC) and women receiving undergraduate/graduate degrees in engineering to 100,000/30,000 by 2026. To achieve this, one of the approaches that we have adopted is community building, partnership, and networking through the formation of regional hubs founded on the predicate of the Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation groups within a certain geographical area or affinity group.
The Northeast Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation program is designed to increase underrepresented minority student enrollment and graduation rates in stEm by offering effective, individualized recruitment and retention services. The New England LSAMP (NELSAMP) provides pre-college and postsecondary academic preparation, mentoring engagement experiences, research opportunities, and career and graduate school preparation programming to ensure students maximize their potential for success in their stEm field of study.
The Northeast Regional Hub (NERHub), led by University of Connecticut, focuses on building partnerships among institutions in the Northeast who share the mission of the Alliance. The multi-year plans for the NERHub include efforts to address issues related to; 1) Retention and Enrichment, 2) Recruitment/Admissions and Readiness, and 3) Institutional Culture and Climate. The Hub is establishing Impact Working Groups for the undergraduate and graduate levels tasked with addressing these three foci. Additionally, the NERHub works closely with the stEm PEER Academy with a focus on scaling-up and providing expertise to implement best practices and pedagogies. We hold a monthly meeting with all partnering institutions as well as bi-weekly meetings with hub leaders. The current partner institutions within the NERHub include:
